News Arhive: New Orleans Airport Renamed After Louis Armstrong |
Travelers to the Big Easy might find themselves whistling "When It's Sleepy Time Down South" when they land at the newly renamed Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport. On Wednesday, the New Orleans city council approved a proposal by Mayor Marc Morial to rename the airport after the city's favorite musical son, according to an airport spokesperson. The official renaming ceremony will take place August 2 as part of a weeklong celebration of what would have been the trumpeter/singer's 100th birthday on August 4 (see "Marsalises To Help Celebrate Louis Armstrong Centennial").
Armstrong died in 1971.
Liverpool, England, airport officials renamed their facility after former Beatle John Lennon (see "Liverpool's Airport Being Renamed After John Lennon") earlier this month. |
